I had to backlink through 3 or 4 sites to locate the original story about how the US has banned Courier New in diplomatic documents, instead "offering a crisper, cleaner, more modern look" via Times New Roman: "US bans timed-honoured typeface. " Notice how we have to go to news outlets outside of the country to find the really important stuff?
(ps. honoured I can live with, but "timed-honoured"?)
2. Jeff makes note of this one. Harper's has published the Princeton Review's verboten topic list for writers of practice questions. Reminds me in no small way of the fuss over the NY State Regents exam questions a couple of years back, when it was discovered that test-writers were rewriting literary passages to remove all traces of "potentially offensive language." And the net they cast was more than wide enough to significantly alter said passages. On the one hand, materials were selected to represent (and rightly so) a wide range of authors; on the other, many of the things that made those authors distinctive (at least in terms of subject matter) were being directly censored.
